Introduction of the Masters

Grandmaster Shi De Qian

The Vice President of Henan Martial Arts Association; Secretary Chief of China Shaolin Quan Research Center; President of China Shaolin Wushu University. Shi De Qian was born in Henan, China, at the foothill of the Shaolin Temple. His birth name is Wang Chang Qing. He is also named “Evergreen”.

He became a disciple of the Shaolin Temple as a child, when he learned martial arts from Master Shi Su Xi. He stayed in the Temple for 31 years, until 1992 as a protection monk. After that he lived outside of the Temple as a layman monk.

Grandmaster Shi De Qian not only learned Shaolin Kung Fu from his master Shi Su Xi, but many Chinese Martial Arts, Acupuncture and Qi Gong bone treatment. He excels in Lohan style, Hei Hu Quan, Yi Jin Jing, and Chinese herbology.

In the last twenty years Shi De Qian has done an enourmous amount of research on martial arts, and has searched over 17 Chinese provinces and south-eastern countries collecting data. In 1992 Shi De Qian finished his two books "Complete Encyclopedia of Shaolin Martial Arts" and "The Secrets of Shaolin Healing". To date Shi De Qian has written over 57 books on martial arts. Now considered a professor of martial arts Shi De Qian writes for the Martial Arts Society, and has been a guest speaker to the United States, Japan, Singapore, and New Zealand.

Master Shi Xing Jian

Master Bao is a 32nd Generation Shaolin Monk from the original Shaolin Temple in Henan province. He is an outstanding martial artist, a national first level coach and successor of Yi Jin Jing. He has many years of experience in teaching foreign students from around the world.

He started to train traditional Chinese martial arts when he was 7 years old. With 12 years he went to the Shaolin Temple and stayed there untill 19. He had the great honor of being a disciple of Shaolin Master Shi De Qian, who was both nationally and internationally well reknown and highly praised. From him he learned not only traditional Shaolin martial arts and different styles of Qi Gong, but also traditional Chinese medicin. Due to his excellent performance he was invited to live with the family of Master Shi De Qian.

Master Bao has participated in national and international martial arts championships and got many awards and high praises: In 2001 he won the first prize in the 'National Traditional Fist and Weapon Competition'. In 2002 he got the first prize in both 'Henan Martial Arts Competition' and 'Henan Traditional Fist Competition' for his weapon form, tiger and eagle form. In 2003 he received the honourable prize for his broadsword and soft weapon on the 'Invitational Martial Arts Competition' in Anhui province. During the same year he was awarded as 'First warrior in Zhengzhou City' at the Martial Arts Championship tournament.

Master Shi Xing Peng

Master Du is a 32nd Generation Shaolin Monk and a national first level sportsman and warrior. He was born in Handan City in Hebei Province, which is also the birthplace of Yang-Style Tai Ji. Influenced by his family he began to learn traditional folk martial arts from his Grandfather, who also used to be a warrior/protection monk in the Shaolin Temple.

In 1998 at the age of 9 he went to the Shaolin Temple and became a warrior monk. He trained very diligently in the temple and during his stay there, participated in many martial arts competitions and obtained excellent results there.

In 2000, he won the first place in 'Succession Shaolin Fist Competition' held in Denfeng City. In the same year, he participated in 'Heibei Yang-Style Tai Chi Martial Arts Exchange' and was awarded the title of 'Excellent Sportsman'. In 2002, he won the first place in the 'National Shaolin Fist Competition' and was awarded the title of 'Excellent Warrior' at the 'Shanghai Martial Arts Exchange Competition'. In 2004 he was invitied to take part in the '7th Succession Intenational Martial Arts Festival', held in Korea. In 2005, he won first place in the 'National Martial Arts Championship'.

He is skilled at traditional Shaolin fist forms, regulated fist form, broadsword, straight sword, staff and spear. He is an outstanding master in terms of skills, teaching ability and personality.

Master Shi Yan Qi

Master Li is a 34th Generation Monk of the Shaolin Temple. He's a nationally respected warrior and sportsman. He began dedicated and diligent training at the Temple in 1997 and due to his excellent performance, he was highly praised by his master and many public figures from the martial arts field.

He has taken part in many large-scale Martial Arts and Sanda competitions, and obtained excellent results. In 2000 he won the first prize in the '1st Shaolin Fist Competition'. In 2004 he performed on the 'International Traditional Martial Arts Festival'.

In 2008 Master Shi Yan Qi performed in the Olympic Games Opening and Closing ceremonies and at the end of the same year he was invited to teach Chinese Kung Fu in Singapore.

Master Zhang Chaojie

The master of traditional fist and Qi Gong started to learn traditional Chinese Kung Fu from his father at a very young age. He has been doing martial arts for over 20 years.

He is a traditional martial artist with high moralities and a friendly personality, who has been teaching traditional kung fu for over 10 years. He also specialises in Shaolin internal Qi Gong, Chin’Na unique skills, martial arts kick boxing, free kick boxing, and so on.

Master Zhang Chaojie has participated in many martial arts competitions. He has gained great reputations and won many well respected and honorable prizes by different civil martial arts organizations. Currently he is at Band 7.

In 1998, he was awarded the special contribution prize on the 'National Qi Gong and Martial Arts Unique Skills Competition'. In 1999 he won the fist competition on the 'Shaolin Martial Arts Competition' which was held in Henan Province. In 2002, he won the outstanding award of the 'Xuzhou Traditional Fist Championship'. In 2003 he did the first place on the 'First National Competition on Martial Arts Inner Strength'. In 2006, he was the winner of 'Jiangsu Traditional Martial Arts and Culture Festival'.


Belajar Kung Fu di Shaolin

ILMU bela diri, shaolin kungfu dari rahib kuil Shaolin memang terkenal, bahkan melegenda di seluruh dunia. Sejak dahulu, bahkan sampai sekarang, banyak orang berkeinginan untuk menuntut ilmu kungfu fighting di kuil ini.

Sebenarnya persyaratan untuk belajar kungfu shaolin di kuil Shaolin, kungfu academy sekarang tidak lagi seketat dan seberat zaman dahulu. Sekarang Anda tidak perlu lagi menjalani tahap-tahap pengujian keuletan niat dan hati untuk bisa diterima sebagai murid shaolin kungfu seperti mengambil air dari sungai kemudian dipikul menuju kuil dan sebagainya seperti digambarkan dalam film-film kung fu shaolin Mandarin.

Anda tinggal mendatangi pengurus kung fu schools lalu mengutarakan keinginan untuk belajar kung fu fighting atau shaolin kung fu Shaolin di academy kungfu. Namun, jangan terkejut kalau pengurus kungfu schools/academy kung fu atau orang yang ditugaskan menyambut tamu memberitahukan mengenai besarnya uang sekolah yang harus dibayar untuk menuntut ilmu kungfu fighting di kungfu academy tersebut. Uang sekolah kung fu schools cukup tinggi melangit bagi orang kebanyakan. Sekitar 100 dollar AS per orang per hari! Ini belum termasuk biaya makan dan akomodasi yang bisa Anda pilih sendiri, hotel atau kamar apartemen di Kota Dengfeng.

“Seratus dollar Amerika per hari terlalu mahal dan terlalu berat bagi saya. Coba bayangkan, berapa ribu dollar harus saya keluarkan kalau saya belajar enam bulan di sana,” kata Orian Lee (19) asal New York, Amerika Serikat. Jauh-jauh datang dari negerinya di belahan barat Bumi ke negeri Tiongkok di belahan timur Bumi ini, Orian Lee bermaksud menimba ilmu kungfu shaolin. Dia sebetulnya sudah belajar kung fu shaolin dari sebuah kungfu schools di Kota New York.

Katanya, untuk meningkatkan kepandaiannya, semula dia memang merencanakan untuk menuntut ilmu kung fu fighting di academy kungfu Shaolin. Tetapi, terbentur biaya yang tinggi itu, dia kemudian memilih salah satu academy kung fu yang banyak terdapat di Kota Dengfeng.

Saat ini Orian tekun menuntut ilmu shaolin kung fu di Henan Dengfeng Shaolin Epo Wushu College di Kota Dengfeng, sekitar 10 mil dari kuil Shaolin. Di sekolah ini dia membayar hanya 500 dollar AS per bulan untuk uang sekolah berikut makan (tiga kali sehari) dan akomodasi berupa sebuah kamar (dengan kapasitas dua tempat tidur untuk dua orang) di asrama sekolah tersebut.

Dia mengambil program belajar enam bulan dan sudah bayar di muka 3.000 dollar AS. Orian mengakui, awal mula dia masuk di sekolah ini dia tidak bisa berbahasa Mandarin. Tapi, kini setelah sebulan tinggal di sekolah ini dia sudah bisa sedikit- sedikit berbicara Mandarin, terutama menyangkut hal keperluan sehari-hari. “Baru-baru saya merasa stres karena tidak bisa berkomunikasi. Tetapi, sekarang sudah tidak lagi. Sedikit-sedikit saya sudah bisa berkomunikasi dengan mereka. Beberapa orang dari mereka bahkan belajar bahasa Inggris dari saya. Kami saling belajar- mengajari,” kata Orian dengan tersenyum.

Kota Dengfeng merupakan kota terakhir yang harus kita lalui untuk sampai di kuil Shaolin sehingga kota ini biasa disebut sebagai “pintu gerbang menuju Shaolin”. Kota ini berada sekitar 16 kilometer dari kawasan kuil Shaolin. Di kota ini kita akan menjumpai sekitar 80 sekolah kungfu, mulai dari yang kecil dan sederhana dengan jumlah murid puluhan orang sampai pada yang besar dan megah dengan jumlah murid ribuan orang. Selain memasang papan nama bertata aksara Mandarin, sekolah-sekolah ini juga memasang papan nama dengan bahasa Inggris. Ada yang menyebut dirinya Shaolin College, ada yang menyebut diri School of Shaolin Martial Arts, dan sebagainya.
Jadi, banyaklah pilihan kita untuk sekolah-sekolah kungfu Shaolin di sini. Tapi, masalahnya adalah manakah yang bear-benar bermutu tinggi di antara sekian banyak sekolah kungfu tersebut. Jadi, pandai-pandailah kita mencari informasi mengenai kualitas sekolah-sekolah kungfu ini. (SN Wargatjie)
